On Friday night at about 8:45 a teacher participating in a tug-of-war contest at Riverhead High School collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. The Phillips Avenue Elementary School teacher Lonnie Hughes, 57, was saved by the quick actions of a team of EMTs who were in the audience watching the competition according to officials from the Riverhead Ambulance Corps.
Special thanks goes out to Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps. members Jennifer Kelly and East Marion Fire Department EMT Gregory Wallace who managed to resuscitate Mr. Hughes. Riverhead EMT, Susan Shleef, also performed CPR. EMTs transported Mr. Hughes to Peconic Bay Medical Center and he was subsequently transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital were he is recovering.
