Suffolk SPCA Seeks Donations for Rescued Pony

A pony rescued in the Calverton raid earlier this year needs medical attention for its eyes.

The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is seeking donations to help treat a pony rescued

The 12-year-old Palomino pony is suffering from a severe medical condition that requires one of its eyes to be removed. The pony is currently taking medication, but without it, docotors say the animal would be in severe pain.

"We have a veterinarian who will perform the surgery, but it will cost five thousand dollars ($5,000.00) to cover the cost of the surgery and subsequent medication," said chief of the Suffolk SPCA Roy Gross in a statement.

The Palomino pony was one of the two dozen horses who were rescued from a Calverton farm this spring afer suffering from neglect. Gross said he had "never seen a volume of horses at one time" like he did at the Calverton farm.

Three of the 24 horses recovered were taken to Hillcrest Stables for rehabilitation at the time.

The Suffolk SPCA is a not for profit organization, existing solely on charitable contributions. "Look into your hearts, dig deep into your pockets," Gross said, asking people to make a donation to help the Palomino pony.

Donations to help the Palomino pony can be sent directly to the Suffolk SPCA (not the ASPCA based out of Manhattan) at 363 Rt 111 in Smithtown, NY 11787. Donations can also be made on the group's website www.suffolkspca.org.
