Week Ahead: 'Winterfest' Kickoff, Dinosaur Dimensions, Walmart Opens

Don't miss a minute of the happenings in Riverhead and around the North Fork this week.

Here's a look at what's happening around Riverhead this week:

- Walmart Opens Wednesday: The new Walmart opens on Route 58 on Wednesday, and to celebrate, $11,500 in grants will be given to local community groups on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, the doors officially open to the public at 7 a.m., and will be open until 10 p.m., seven days a week. The store relocated from the former Walmart location in Riverhead at 765 Old Country Road. The new store will include an expanded line of groceries and an assortment of general merchandise.

- The Winterfest Kickoff Event: A beloved musical tradition is back this week as Live on the Vine Winterfest kicks off on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Suffolk Theater. Tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Performing at the event will be Gene Casey and the Lone Sharks, Bakithi Kumalo and Mambo Loco.

Live on the Vine Winterfest is a six-week mid-winter music festival that unfolds across the East End in vineyard tasting rooms, hotels, theaters and other venues. The event runs from Feb. 8 through March 16, 2014.

With a new name this year — the event was previously called "Jazz on the Vine," musical offerings have expanded this year to include blues, soul and country music. Winterfest is a project of East End Arts, The Long Island Wine Council, and Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau, with support from Suffolk County under the auspices of the Office of Film & Cultural Affairs. - Bring the kids for a fun-filled morning at the Long Island Science Center on Saturday at 11 a.m. as "Dinosaur Dimensions" takes place. Kids can learn about when giant reptiles ruled the earth and enjoy dino-themed activities and crafts.

- Sylvester Manor's Annual Bluegrass Concert: Head to Shelter Island on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for an evening of contemporary country fusion with the Grammy-nominated Steel Drivers from Nashville. The Sylvester Manor Educational Farm, in cooperation with the Shelter Island Town Recreation Department, presents the event. Reserved seats for the SteelDrivers are $25, $30 and $35.  Purchase your tickets here or by calling Sylvester Manor at  631-749-0626.
