Jazz Legend Teddy Charles, Former Greenporter, Dead at 84

Renowned vibraphonist played with Charles Mingus and other legendary jazz greats.

Teddy Charles, a master of the vibraphone who played over the years with the likes of Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and others during the height of the jazz era, died at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead at the age of 84 on Monday. The Suffolk Times published a full obituary of Charles, a colorful man who'd lived in Greenport and most recently in Riverhead, where he continued to inspire jazz musicians at weekly jam sessions in his livingroom. Charles also owned and operated a sailing charter boat for years out of Greenport Harbor and was known as a great captain. Young Mother Dies In Childbirth; Family Seeks Help to Send Her Body Home

Collection boxes have been set up in area businesses to help send Raquel Reyes-Marin's body home to Mexico for burial.

The family of a 27-year-old Flanders mother who died in childbirth is desperately trying to raise enough money to send her body home to Mexico for burial. Raquel Reyes-Marin died on April 7, 2012 while giving birth. She was born Dec. 19, 1984. Collection boxes have been set up in businesses around Flanders and Southampton Town to help her family raise enough money to send Reyes-Marin’s body home to Mexico. A religious service will be held on Friday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Roman Catholic Church in Southampton. Visitation was held Wednesday and Thursday at the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton. To donate funds, call 631-287-9647.

Environmental Activist, Edie Muma, Dies at 96

Forest Hills native helped the Long Island Pine Barrens Society implement the 2 percent real estate transfer tax, served on several other non-profit board of directors.

Edith N. Muma left this world a far better place on March 17th. Edie died peacefully at home with her daughter, Dee at her side. As sad as we are to lose her, she and her work, will forever live on.  Born on December 7, 1915, in Forest Hills, New York, to Jessie Patterson Cooke and Roland Holbrook Smith, Edie was also the step-daughter of Charles F. Noyes. Edie grew up on Clinton Avenue in Brooklyn, and was a member of Bennington College's first graduating class. A visionary woman, she went right to work for the New York City Housing Authority, and before very long, became a national YWCA board member. On July 12, 1938, she married the love of her life, John R. Muma. In 1947, Edith's stepfather, Charles F. Noyes established a foundation …

Funeral, Visiting Arrangements Set for Jim Bissett

Visitation for Jim Bissett, 48, will be held Sunday and Monday in Holbrook.

Funeral services and visitation have been set for Mattituck resident James Bissett, who died Wednesday at age 48. Bissett was a businessman who helped bring the Long Island Aquarium and Hyatt Hotel to downtown Riverhead and owned Holstville-based Bissett Nursery and Bissett Equipment. Visitation will be held on Sunday and Monday, at Moloney's Holbrook Funeral Home, located at 825 Main St. in Holbrook. Visiting hours on both days will run from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. On Monday, a eulogy will be read at 8 p.m. He is survived by his wife, Carole, and his three children, Dominique Bissett-Biscardi, Danielle, and James IV. Northville Resident and Former Coach Kerry Moran Dies at 68

Longtime St. Anthony's and Whitman coach was a staunch community activist in Northville.

Kerry Moran, a longtime teacher and cross-country coach at Whitman High School and St. Anthony’s in Huntington and longtime North Fork resident, died Sept. 14. He was 68. The former coach and educator was critically injured in July 2010 by being struck by a car near his home in Northville. Born in Quincy, Mass., on March 24, 1943, Moran grew up in Queens, graduating from Bishop Loughlin High School and St. John's University, where he met his wife, Bernadette. They were married in 1968. Moran began his career teaching English and coaching track in the Bronx before coming to Long Island, where he taught English and coached for many years at Walt Whitman High School and St. Anthony’s until retiring to the North Fork in 2004. Wake for Det. Sgt. Robert Reecks to be Held in Mattituck

Visiting hours for Suffolk County Hate Crimes Unit detective who died in a car crash this past Saturday are announced for this week.

Funeral services for Det. Sgt. Robert Reecks, former commander of the Suffolk County Police Department Hate Crimes Unit who died in a car crash early Saturday morning, will be held at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Visiting hours are on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Thursday service will be held at 10 a.m. at the Mother Teresa Tribute Center at 123 Ronkonkoma Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma. Reecks, a Riverhead resident who was long-time friends with DeFriest-Grattan’s owner Joseph Grattan, veered off Sunrise Highway in Moriches Saturday morning and hit a portion of a concrete bridge with a 2008 Ford Escort around 5:32 a.m., police said. Obituary: Richard Musarra Was a Gentleman of the Highest Order

Former Southampton resident and Southampton Press employee Richard Musarra, 66, was a staple at Coopers Beach and area tennis courts in the summer months. His love for the season was galvanized by his passion for long ocean swims and the game of tennis. But his athletic endeavors were second to his family and friends. One of the kindest souls you will ever meet, Richard was truly one of a kind. Born September 3, 1944, Richard died June 11, 2011 at his home in Aquebogue after a three-year battle with cancer. Gregarious and good-natured, Richard was a gentleman of the highest order. Chuck Adams, Local Writer and Sports Reporter, Remembered by Family and Friends

Writer for Times/Review Newspapers died on Tuesday at age 55.

Chuck Adams, a well-known writer and sports reporter for the Times/Review Newspapers from Mattituck, died on Tuesday at the Peconic Bay Medical Center He was 55. Adams was a busy sports reporter for more than a quarter century and host of the local cable television show, 'The Hot Stove League.' "It is a really sad day with the passing of Chuck," said Todd Gulluscio, the athletic director at Greenport High School. "He promoted kids and sports very well. When he wrote an article it was almost like he was on the sideline next to you. "Personally, I am going to miss him. I can't tell you how many people I met who said 'Have you heard?'
