Updated: Responders Rush to Flanders Car Crash

Three vehicles were involved in a chain reaction crash at a traffic light on Route 24.

Police and firefighters responded around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday evening to a three-car crash on Bellows Pond Road in Flanders. Responders on the scene said the cars crashed in a chain reaction at a traffic light. Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The Hampton Bays Fire Department was called to bring heavy rescue equipment to the scene.

Rash of Minor Accidents Snarl Traffic

Police say more people around Riverhead also means a bevy of fender benders.

Sunny skies and warm temperatures mean not only an uptick in people out and about, enjoying the beauty of Riverhead -- but also, a rise in the number of fender benders, police say. Riverhead Town police were busy Saturday morning -- by 1 p.m., they'd already responded to the scene of a bevy of car accidents, including fender benders and minor accidents at sites including the intersection of Oswald Avenue and West Main Street, outside the Riverhead Historical Society,  Roanoke Avenue, Old Country Road, Route 58, and Northville Turnpike. Riverhead Teacher Pleads Not Guilty to Gun, DWI Charges

Southampton resident Joe Johnson, who teaches 4th grade, pleaded not guilty to an 11-count indictment.

A Riverhead fourth grade teacher arrested last month and charged with driving while intoxicated with a loaded handgun in his car pleaded not guilty to 11 charges in Suffolk County Court on Friday. According to Bob Clifford, spokesman for Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota, Joe Johnson, of Southampton, pleaded not guilty to all 11 charges in a grand jury indictment. The indictment said that Johnson was accused by the grand jury of Suffok County with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, "an armed violent felony," as well as one felony count of  criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, and one misdemeanor charge of criminal possession of a weapon; one count of driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, …

UPDATE: Sex Offender Allegedly Attacked Woman At Knifepoint

Flanders resident Benjamin S. Griffin, 57, was charged with allegedly forcing a female into the woods.

A man arrested last week for attacking a woman at knifepoint is a convicted Level 3 sex offender, police say. An attempted second-degree assault charge, a class-D felony, was leveled at Flanders resident Benjamin S. Griffin, 57, May 12 at 12:38 a.m. after police said he attempted to force a female victim into the woods in Riverside with a knife and attempted to assault her with the weapon. Griffin, said police, was apprehended shortly after the incident and taken into custody. He was additionally charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class-D felony. According to police, a woman was walking near the bus stop located at the traffic circle in Riverside at approximately 10 p.m. on May 12 when a man allegedly attacked her…

Asst. DA: Murder Suspect Admits to Raping, Strangling Victim

A man has been charged with murder after Mirian Garcia, 29, was found dead last week behind the Department of Motor Vehicles in Riverhead allegedly strangled her with a belt after raping her. Suffolk County homicide detectives arrested Guillermo Alfonso Alvarado-Ajcuc, 21, of Riverhead for the alleged murder of Mirian Garcia, 29 on Wednesday at approximately 6 p.m.  Alvarado-Ajcuc, a Guatamalan resident who is in the United States without a green card, was charged with one count of murder in the second degree and rape in the first degree. He was held overnight before his arraignment at the Riverhead Town Court Thursday morning. Garcia, of Flanders, was found dead at a Riverhead shopping center on May 7. Riverhead Teen Pleads Guilty To Shootings

A Riverhead teenager pleaded guilty last week after two November shootings. Juan Soyos-Pixtun, 18, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted assault in the first degree, four counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and two counts of assault in the second degree, according to Robert Clifford, spokesperson for Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota, on Tuesday. The DA's office, Clifford said, will recommend a seven year determination, plus five years of post release supervision. Soyos-Pixtun is slated to be sentenced on June 12 before Judge Mark Cohen. Police: Wielding Machete, Riverhead Man Charged With Attempted Assault

Tomas Jonas Lopez-Giron, 35, of Riverhead was charged with second-degree attempted assault, second-degree menacing and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon on May 9 at 8:40 a.m., after police responded to a report of a dispute at an East Marion jobsite, police said. A cement truck driver told police that a contractor, later identified as Lopez-Giron, first threatened him with a hammer and then came at him with a machete, police said. Although the victim did not receive any injuries, the machete did cut through his jacket and left marks on his arm, police said. The …

Crash on Route 58 Involves Multiple Cars

Injuries sustained were not serious, police say.

Riverhead Town police responded on Thursday afternoon to a multiple car accident on Route 58 that involved a box truck and a number of vehicles and left at least three injured. The accident, which occurred at approximately 4:20 p.m. on Thursday involved a number of cars and closed a portion of Route 58 in the vicinity of McDonald's and the Department of Motor Vehicles for over an hour. Police say at least three individuals were brought to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. On Thursday evening, police said the accident, while stopping traffic and involving multiple ambulances, was not serious, and the injuries were minor.
