Local Bands Battle to Benefit Burn Victim

The Riverhead Key Club raised almost $800 to help offset Michael Hubbard's medical bills.

Nearly 100 people braved the blazing heat to attend a Battle of the Bands competition in Stotzky Park to benefit a local Riverhead boy who was badly burned in an exploding gel candle accident. The competition was organized by the Riverhead Key Club, a high school service group, and raised about $800 to help offset Michael Hubbard's medical bills.  Hubbard has remained in a coma since May 28 when a gel candle exploded, leaving the boy with third-degree burns on his face, chest, and arms. Six different bands from across Long Island played at the event, with Coastline, a band of Riverhead High School graduates, taking home the top prize. Video: Riverhead High Teens Take the Stage in Indie Teen Concert Series

Orchestral strings and choral groups performed Thursday downtown at Vail-Leavitt.

Two groups of Riverhead High School musicians performed at Vail-Leavitt Music Hall Thursday evening in January's edition of the Indie Teen Concert Series. The orchestral string group, CWC Chamber Ensemble performed at approximately 7:15 p.m., followed by the choral group Fermata Nowhere about an hour later. The Indie Teen Concert Series is a monthly concert run in conjunction with Vail-Leavitt Music Hall, Jeff "Doc" Greenberger - a Latin teacher at Riverhead high school - and local music groups, most of whom perform original content.
