New Take On Gym Class Energizes Students

Kids can learn self-defense, yoga, and Zumba at Riverhead High School.

Gone are the days of yore, when the mention of gym class conjured up images of endless sit-ups, laps, and rope climbing that sent some female students scurrying to the nurse's office for an excuse to skip. A personal wellness class offered at Riverhead High School, currently in its third year, gives students a variety of choices and teaches them about exercise, anatomy, diet and nutrition -- and a large number of girls are opting in. Rather than competitive sports, the class focuses on a wide range of activities aimed at individual stengthening, including aerobics, cardio kickboxing, yoga, Pilates, free weights, Zumba, step aerobics, self defense and others. Class popularity has soared over the past three years, said Riverhead High School …

Riverhead Teens Rock In Robotics Competition

Second place winners built a robot.

It all started with a robot named Robo Blitz. Using hard work, intelligence and creativity, three Riverhead High School students, Perla Leon, Nylejah Green and Jessica Jarez-Lopez -- as well as Dale Samuel, who is home schooled -- took home a second place prize in the New York Science and Technology Entry Partnership (STEP) Robotics Competition. The event took place on March 30 in Albany; the team came in second out of 11 competing teams. Each of the three young women who won have been involved with robotics since the 7th grade. "We were really excited when we found out we placed second," said Perla. "It was really fun to build and program our robot." The robot was designed using Lego Mindstorms software and bult out of Legos; the team …

Riverhead High School Goes Crazy for Sports

Fun was had by all as teachers and staff competed in an array of fun sport events on Thursday night.

It was a crazy night at Riverhead High School. Crowds turned out for "Crazy Sports Night," organized by the PTO Executive Council to raise funds for two of Riverhead's own students, Christopher Timpone and Michael Hubbard. Riverhead High School Principal David Wicks served as referee and Doc Greenberger and Lorene Custer kept the crowds cheering for more as master and madam of ceremonies. Teams competed in events including an obstacle course, hula hoop chain, basketball competition, scooter and three-legged sack races and a good old-fashioned tug of war. In the end, the middle school team ruled with 33 points, with the high school contestants coming in second, with 21 points.

Vintage View: Starry Night

Patch is featuring vintage-styled photos of the community taken with Instagram or Hipstamatic smartphone apps.

In this Vintage View, we get a nighttime view of the Riverhead sky at Riverhead High School on July 6. Also in this shot is the J.E. Young Observatory sitting on the high school grounds. While not as imposing as the nearby Custer Observatory in Southold, the Young Observatory can still show a great view when it opens for special events. We're always accepting photos, so feel free to send Riverhead Patch your smart phone photos or mention us in your tweets (@RiverheadPatch) to let us know when you post one. Question of the Day: How Do You Feel About the Split School Bond Proposals?

The School Board will vote on Tuesday to hold a two-part proposal for votes on the school bond and a bond for gym space.

The School Board released its agenda on Friday, detailing a plan to vote to put a two part-proposal before a public vote to gain approval for a $78 million capital improvements bond and a separate $7 million bond for gym space. The $78 million bond would eliminate the use of modular classrooms throughout the district, replace outdated roofs and update classrooms, according to the project's architects. The second proposal, which would only apply if the first bond passed, would devote $7 million towards construction of a new 16,000-square-foot gymnasium and additional storage and office space at Riverhead High School. The proposed date for the bond vote is Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. How do you feel about the proposed idea to have…
