Papa Nick's: Serving Up A Taste Of Home

Generations of Riverhead residents have found friendship and flapjacks at the Star Confectionary.

Riverhead resident Howie Gassert has been coming to Star Confectionary for over 50 years for the pancakes and eggs -- and the friendly atmosphere that make locals feel as though they've come home.

Star Confectionary, affectionately known as "Papa Nick's" has been serving up favorites such as homemade peach ice cream, burgers and pancakes since 1920, when Nick Meras opened his doors on Main Street in downtown Riverhead.

Today, his grandson Anthony Meras helms the popular eatery, where generations of locals and friends gather every morning for coffee, conversation, laughter and memories.

"This is old school Riverhead," said Jerry Steiner. "It's a multi-generational business."

Patrons stop at each others' booths to say hello; customers joke with Meras as he flips flapjacks at the grill.

Jack Randazzo, Charlie Grioso, Pat Vecchio, and Joe Casali come once a week, after the gym. "The food is great," Vecchio said. "Its a pleasant atmosphere."

"It's a place where everybody knows everybody," Meras said. "We want them to feel comfortable. We want them to feel like they're coming home."
