Good Samaritans Wrestle Keys From Alleged Drunk Driver

Also, suspicious driving leads to a drug charge for a Flanders woman.

The following arrests were reported by the Southampton Town Police Department west of the Shinnecock Canal over the past week. A charge is an accusation. Defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Flanders

  • Fredy Lopez, 24, of Riverhead, was arrested on Oct. 6 on a drunken driving charge. According to police, Lopez was driving a 1997 Honda Civic on Silverbrook Drive at around 8:30 a.m. and nearly struck multiple vehicles. Two good Samaritans who witnessed Lopez boxed him in with their vehicles and wrestled the keys from him, police said. One witness reportedly held his arm, while the other witness went around to the passenger side and pulled the keys out of the ignition. When police arrived, they gave Lopez a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer. His breathalyzer registered at .25 percent blood alcohol level. Lopez was arrested and charged with aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, also a misdemeanor.
  • A 48-year-old Flanders woman was arrested on Oct. 4 on a drug possession charge. According to police. the woman was driving a 1995 Mercury Sable in a suspicious manner on Flanders Road at around 3:30 a.m. When police pulled the woman over they discovered crack cocaine hidden between her legs and in the vehicle. She was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.
