Man Attacked While Walking Home In Flanders

The following crimes and suspicious incidents were reported by to Southampton Town Police for points west of the Shinnecock Canal.

Flanders

• A Flanders man was sent to the hospital after reportedly being attacked while walking home near Cypress Avenue on Sep. 8. According to police, the victim was walking to his home on Maple Avenue at around 8:45 p.m. when he said he was approached by five or six men who ganged up on him. The men reportedly pushed him to the ground, and punched him in the head and face. The victim ran off to seek shelter at a house on Silverbrook Avenue until police arrived. The victim said the attack was unprovoked. He suffered substantial pain to his face and was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment. No arrests have been made.
• A juvenile was caught shooting out a neighbor’s door window with a BB gun in Flanders on Sep. 5. According to police, the boy shot at the rear kitchen door of a home on Suffolk Avenue at around 1 p.m., causing it to shatter. The damage was estimated at about $250. Police seized the young man’s BB gun and contacted his father. All parties have agreed to settle the issue by making restitution on the broken window.

Riverside

• A Bay Constable was the victim of identity theft in Riverside on Sep. 5. According to police, on two occasions an unknown person used the constable’s ID to make purchases at the Valero Gas station located on Riverhead Circle at around 2 p.m. The constable said he received a bill from Valero for $93 in gas charges he didn’t make. Police intend to follow up with employee interviews and to view surveillance cameras for leads.
• Police discovered an abandoned vehicle that had been driven off the road and crashed into trees in Flanders on Sep. 8. Police found the vehicle on the side of Old Quogue Road at around 6:15 a.m., but it was unoccupied. License plates were still on the vehicle and the case is being investigated.

Speonk

• A Speonk man was swindled out of $1,350 after he was contacted over the phone by a person who told the man he had won a sweepstakes worth $2 million and a Mercedes Benz on Sep. 5. The victim was told he first had to forward $1,350 in processing fees to the caller. The victim purchased three Green Dot MoneyPak cards and provided the suspect with the numbers. The suspect used the numbers and accessed the funds. Officers advised the victim to block the suspect’s number in case he attempts to call back. The investigation is ongoing.

Westhampton

• Someone stole a mounted Lennox air-conditioning unit from its metal frame on the side of a person’s yard on North Quarter Road on Sep. 7. The victim called 911 at around 10:15 a.m. to report the crime. There were no fingerprints at the scene or video surveillance of the property. The investigation is ongoing.

Hampton Bays

• An East Setauket man was sent to the hospital after a violent fight at the Boardy Barn on Montauk Highway on Sep. 1. According to police, the man got into an altercation with another patron at around 7 p.m. and was reportedly punched and kicked by the bouncers before they threw him out of the establishment. The victim admitted to police he was intoxicated at the time. The Hampton Bays ambulance took him to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead with a possible concussion, a cut that required 11 stitches and a broken nose. No arrests were made.
• Someone urinated and defecated on the ground outside the back door of a thrift shop, located at Cemetery Road on Aug. 31. Police said the complaint came in at 1:37 p.m. from the shop’s owner. The officer at the scene told the owner they would have had to catch the person in the act and the person would need to be warned beforehand not to come onto the property. The owner wished only to document the incident at this time.
• A police cruiser was sideswiped during a routine traffic stop in Hampton Bays on Sep. 1. According to police, a Southampton Town police officer was conducting a traffic stop on Lynn Avenue, near Cormorant Drive, at around 2:20 a.m. when a dark colored SUV hit the side of the cruiser as it sped past. The officer, who was standing outside the stopped vehicle at the time, dove out of the way and was not injured. He called for help, and Southampton Town and State police officers combed the area for the vehicle, but it was never found.
• A violent fight at Neptunes Beach Club on Sep. 2 sent one man to Southampton Hospital with a possible broken eye socket. According to police, they were called to the popular Dune Road spot at around 5:40 a.m. after the victim and his friends claimed he was hit with a bottle by a fellow patron. The victim would not cooperate in giving any more details to police and he was sent to the hospital for treatment. No arrests were made and the investigation is ongoing.
• A visitor from Spain got an unfriendly welcome when someone stole his camera, worth $700, on Ponquogue Beach off Dune Road in Hampton Bays on Sep. 6. According to police, the victim was at the beach at around 8 a.m. when he put his Canon 550-D camera down on a towel and went to the water. When he returned to his towel the camera was gone. Police say the victim saw a Hispanic man walking toward the parking lot, but the man was gone by the time the victim got over to the lot.
• A woman backing out of her driveway was sideswiped by a passing vehicle that fled the scene without stopping on Sep. 7. According to police, the woman was backing her 2011 Hyundai Sonata out of her driveway on Penny Lane at around 11:15 p.m. when a dark colored pickup truck hit her vehicle and kept going northbound. The woman’s vehicle sustained damage to the driver side rear. Police are still investigating the incident.

Remsenberg

• Someone stole six air conditioning units worth $6,000 from the side of a home on Cedar Lane sometime between Sep. 1 and 2. According to police, the units were mounted to a frame outside the house, which is currently up for sale. Neighbors claimed to have seen a blue car back into the driveway on Sep 1 at around noon.

Quiogue

• Someone broke into a home in Quiogue on Sep. 6 and stole jewelry and the homeowner’s identification. A resident on Peters Lane called 911 at around 1 p.m. to report that a burglar had entered his home through a front window screen, which they removed. An officer from the Sheriff’s department arrived at the scene with a K-9 unit but a search of the area came up empty. Stolen was a New York State driver’s license, a pearl Tiffany necklace, triple hoop gold earrings, a woman’s diamond ring and a men’s gold wedding band. The value of the stolen items was not disclosed.
• Someone stole a gray Crafstman ride-on lawnmower from the backyard of a home on Peters Lane on Sep. 7. According to police the lawn mower disappeared from the property at some point between 8 p.m. on Sept. 6 and 8 a.m. on Sept. 7.
