Seat Belt Sting Nets Sea of Summonses

Do you buckle up?

Drivers who forgot to buckle up had to head down to pay the piper recently.

Riverhead Town police announced Wednesday that after participating in the "Buckle Up New York -- Click It or Ticket" campaign, they nabbed 83 individuals, who were issued summonses for seatbelt violations.

Police conducted four daytime seatbelt and safety checkpoints and one evening enforcement effort from May 20 through June 2.

Also issued were three summonses for child restraint violations, and 98 other vehicle and traffic violations.

In addition, Riverhead police busted two individuals, one for driving while intoxicated and the other for a warrant.

Meanwhile, the department's overall Buckle Up New York campaign, which includes the department's patrol division efforts, has yielded 173 summonses for seatbelt violations, nine child restraint violations, and 322 other vehicle and traffic infractions, including uninspected and unregistered vehicles, unlicensed drivers, and driving while using a cell phone.

Police intend to continue with amped up enforcement regarding seatbelt use and will also participate in New York State's Selective Enforcement Program throughout the summer, with an eye toward lowering accident rates and traffic fatalities.
